Stay Alert, Not Fearful: My Personal Safety Guide for Event Goers

In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of our safety and stay alert, but that doesn’t mean we should live in fear or miss out on making amazing memories. As someone who’s been to countless concerts, festivals, and events—many of them solo—I’ve learned a few things along the way that have helped me feel confident and secure while still having a blast. This guide includes the personal tips I use at every event to stay aware without feeling anxious, and I hope they’ll help you do the same.

Before the Event

Map the Area You know that map on our phones? Yeah, that can actually be a great tool for staying proactive about your safety. I like to look at the map beforehand to get a feel for the area around the venue, especially to know where the parking and entrances are. Share Your Plans/Location Whether you're heading out with a group or flying solo, it’s super important to let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back—no matter how old or young you are or how many concerts you've attended. This is something I still do for every event, and I don't think it should ever be overlooked. Sharing your location with a friend or family member is just a small step, but it can make a huge difference. There's no harm in taking this precaution, and honestly, there may be harm if you don’t. Bonus Tip Throw an AirTag in your shoe, bra, shorts—anywhere someone’s less likely to check. That way, even if your phone is lost or stolen, your location can still be tracked. If you don't already have an AirTag, click to purchase one here! Pack Smart Pack only the essentials in a secure bag—look for one with a zipper or a clip that’s hard to open to deter pickpockets. Concerts nowadays often use Apple Pay, so load your card onto your phone and skip the hassle of bringing cash. If you do bring a card, just take one to minimize what could be lost or stolen. Also, I always bring a mini pepper spray, like this one, to every event I attend, and I've never had a problem with it. It really helps me feel safer while enjoying the event! Keep Your Phone Charged This one's a duh! Make sure your phone is fully charged before heading out—trust me, it’s going to die faster than you think on a long night with all those photos and videos! I always bring a portable charger, like this one, just in case. Staying connected is key, so charge up and be ready Park Smart When parking, I always try to park as close to a light post as possible. It might not seem like a big deal during the day, but when you’re heading back to your car after the event, having it well-lit makes a huge difference. Plus, it makes finding your car a lot easier in the dark! Stay in Groups (or Go Solo) Yes, I’m sure this is the obvious one you’ve heard plenty of times, but if you can go with friends, great—there’s always safety in numbers, and you can keep an eye on each other. But let me just say, going solo is completely fine! I’ve gone to so many events on my own, and it’s all about staying aware of your surroundings. Solo events can be just as fun, and you get to enjoy it your way! From Car to Venue That walk from the car to the venue? Pay attention! I like to take a mental note of my surroundings, so it’s easier to find my way back later—especially when it’s dark. Bonus Tip Pin your parking spot on your phone map so you’re not lost afterward. You’ll thank yourself!

During the Event

Keep Your Valuables Safe

Crossbody bags or fanny packs, like the one seen below, are your best friend here. Keep your phone, wallet, and other valuables close to your body. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but having your essentials secure lets you focus on the fun without worrying about anything getting lost or stolen.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings Be mindful of those around you. If you notice suspicious behavior or feel uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to move to a different area or alert security personnel. Staying aware doesn’t mean living in fear; it’s about being informed and ready to enjoy the event fully.

After the Event

Stay with Your Group If you went with friends, stick together when leaving. It’s always easier to navigate when you’re in a group. But if you’re on your own, don’t stress—you can still walk out confidently. I always keep my phone handy and make sure I know where I’m headed.

Be Cautious in the Parking Lot Walking to your car after the event? Stay in well-lit areas and keep your head up. Just being a little aware can make a huge difference, and it’ll help you stay relaxed while you reflect on the amazing time you just had.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, these tips are here to help you feel more secure, but nothing’s guaranteed.

That being said though, the goal isn’t to be scared—it’s to be prepared and confident so you can enjoy yourself to the fullest. So go out there, dance like no one’s watching, sing your heart out, and make some unforgettable memories. You’ve got this!
